    Improve 2020 Vision by Clarifying Worldviews: Honor-Shame, Freedom-Guilt, Power-Fear

    March 7, 2020 - 11:15 AM Room: N15

    Bruce Green

    Bruce Green

In this age of increasing cultural diversity we need to understand how others see reality. In other words, what is their worldview? Understanding worldviews, both ours and our neighbors, can help equip us to better advance God’s Kingdom. Most unreached people groups in the world, including Muslims, think according to an honor-shame worldview. Western Christianity, on the other hand, is steeped in the contrasting freedom-guilt worldview. Still other cultures have a dominant fear-power worldview. Debilitating blind spots often happen when only one worldview is considered. Such worldview blindness can erect barriers of suspicion instead of building bridges of trust. Since the Bible was largely written in an honor-shame context, Christians can distort the good news if we interpret the Bible using only freedom-guilt filters. The freedom-guilt worldview can produce “freedom-out-of-control” excesses in society such as gender-choice confusion, radical feminism and abortion-on-demand. People from a honor-shame worldview can react to these extremes with fear and isolation. Alternatively, extremes of the honor-shame worldview can support “honor killings” and even terrorism. We must avoid judging by the extremes and see value in other worldviews. In reaching Muslims, understanding honor-shame worldview is more important than understanding Islam. Our job is not to shame Muhammad but to honor Jesus. We can avoid religious debate as we seek to honor Jesus.

    Your Gospel is Too Small

    March 7, 2020 - 11:15 AM Room: WC 215

    Barry Willbanks

    Barry Willbanks

We will look at the shrinking of the Gospel as good news for isolated individuals who can populate heaven, rather than embracing a full-orbed Gospel than allows us to work toward the kingdom of God on earth, which Jesus taught us to pray for. Are we preaching the Gospel in a way that segregates people or builds community? Are we more busy managing boundaries among us rather than enlarging the kingdom work we are called to share? What is the end goal of preaching the Gospel? Is it escape from the world or transformation of the world? Come lets deepen our mission by expanding our understanding of the Gospel.
