Colleen joined Bethany in January 2011 as Director of Outreach & Development - SF Bay Area (Santa Rosa south to Monterey) Her mission is to equip and support Bay Area communities: churches, hospitals, pregnancy centers, counseling centers, schools and women's health clinics - offering life-affirming pregnancy counseling and adoption services through Bethany Christian Services. She is passionate to educate current culture about the new era of open adoption and works to bring ministries and communities together in partnership with each other to serve more effectively. Colleen believes every woman should have the support of her church and community to make life-affirming choices in pregnancy and be honored throughout, just as every child should have the chance for life and a loving home.

2015 Workshop

Marriage & Families: God’s Heart for Families Facing Unplanned Pregnancy

Women are expected to choose life for their unplanned pregnancies, but many feel stigmatized and ostracized by the church which inadvertently shames them toward abortion. One Christian woman recently admitted, "I'd rather face God with an abortion than face my church with my unplanned pregnancy." Fewer than 1% of women with unplanned pregnancies choose an adoption plan, while approximately 49% choose abortion - even within the church community. Why is adoption so rarely considered? Deborah Giese will share her personal story as a pastor's daughter who became pregnant in college, her experience as a single mother, as a birth mother for her second child, and the surprising responses of the church community. Colleen Marquez will share the lessons she has learned through the open adoptions she shares with her children's birth families, and in her experience working with Bethany Christian Services. Together, Colleen and Deborah will explore how the church can better walk alongside those facing these challenges, and how we as individuals can have God's heart to support and honor the life-affirming choices of parenting and adoption today.
