21st Century Issues: Congregations as First Responders


Traditionally and culturally, the community looks to the local church for help in the event of a catastrophic event. Most church facilities can serve as mass shelters; church members can check on and transport shut-ins; they can provide counseling and care services. Congregations are strategically located to serve as a ready source of volunteer labor; they can feed and shelter homeless; and they can provide vital services to their immediate area.
