As the Associate Pastor at CV First I spend most of my time overseeing ministry, training leaders and providing pastoral care. I very much love what God has me doing in this season and regularly argue with one of the other pastors on who has the best job!

Education: I graduated from San Jose City College, San Jose Christian College (which is now William Jessup University) and Western Seminary and it only took me 20 years!

Family: I married my best friend and true love Mary in 1995 and have two amazing boys. Elijah who was born in 2006 and Josiah who was born in 2012. I would say that next to God, the thing I enjoy most in this world is spending time with my family – they are so much fun an such a blessing to be with!

My favorite “quote / saying / verse”: From the Bible I love 1 Timothy 1:15-17 which says, “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst. But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his immense patience as an example for those who would believe in him and receive eternal life.”

From the testimony of the saints I love “Man’s chief end is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever.”

We are most fulfilled when we can serve with joy, confidence, honesty and courage ... using our unique giftedness while sitting in the 2nd Chair.

2018 Workshops

21st Century Issues: When Church Hurts

3/2/2018

When we are part of a local body, sooner or later we will be hurt. We will be hurt by leadership. We will be hurt by each other. We will be hurt as something we love is changed and as our expectations for what the church is supposed to be is challenged. We become disappointed, heart-broken and many times we feel betrayed. We get angry, depressed and either disconnect or retreat. Many never recover and fade into a luke-warm Christian existence. Others try sticking it out but never fully heal. There must be a better way! In this class Pastor Matty will be sharing biblical insight as well as personal stories and examples of dealing fruitfully with hurts in the church.

21st Century Issues: Ministry Burnout: From Marthas into Marys.

3/3/2018

Ministry burnout is real. Within it we find ourselves depressed, hurt, critical, anxious, with feelings of exhaustion and hopelessness. And many of us who find ourselves there can’t find our way out. Our faith grows cold, our sin gains control, and we despair. But there is hope. God is not done with us! Come here Pastor Matty share as he speaks about his own severe ministry burnout and how God healed and restored him through the process.

2016 Workshops

21st Century Issues: Transgender Issues and Church

3/4/2016

Transgender issues can be confusing – especially for those in the church. What does it mean to be transgendered? Is it the same as being gay? Is it sinful to cross-dress? Can a Christian struggle with gender identify? Should we support sex-change procedures? These questions are not easy to answer or deal with yet as strangers in the Bay Area on mission for the Cross we must know what to do and say. In this class Pastor Matthew will be providing a biblical framework for loving others in this context.
